More Info Position Description: Full time nurse practitioner/physician assistant opening in the beautiful seaport of Skagway, Alaska! Primary, urgent and emergent care is provided in a beautiful, large, new clinic building that is fully equipped and updated. Dahl Memorial Clinic is a federally funded community health center that provides the only emergency care in the municipality of Skagway.

The qualified provider must be nationally certified as a provider with licensure and prescriptive authority in the state of Alaska, or be able to obtain prior to employment. The qualified individual must also be ATLS, PALS, ACLS certified or be willing to become certified within 6 months of employment. Must be willing to rotate call with two other providers. Dahl Memorial Clinic has extensive laboratory capabilities as well as digital x-ray and ultrasound on site. Prefer an experienced provider who is comfortable working autonomously, but will consider a strong new graduate with emergency department experience.

More Info General Summary:These positions are based in Remote Alaska. The provider will be solo in very remote locations providing urgent / emergent care. The workforce consists of oilfield contractor employees. The number of employees varies considerably due to construction stages, drilling operations, maintenance and operations. The offsite physician back up support is in Anchorage. Provides acute and occupational medical care to on-site employees.

Essential Job Functions: Duties include primary healthcare, emergency medical response, first aid training and promotion of lifestyle issues including fitness and healthy eating. The successful candidate will also be responsible for health and hygiene inspections and advising on other safety issues, in addition to general administration and computer based reporting.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Responds to emergency situations. This includes routine minor illness, medical emergencies, and trauma. Builds volunteer medical response teams. Directs triage, patient transport, and medical supervision at mass casualty incidents. Interfaces with other response team sections. Maintains readiness of emergency equipment and supplies.
  • Determines the need for emergency air evacuation of seriously ill or injured patients to appropriate medical centers in Anchorage and Fairbanks.
  • Diagnoses and treats illnesses and injuries of the workforce according to collaborative agreement with the supervising physicians.
  • Conducts laboratory and electro-cardiograph diagnostic procedures as required.
  • Refers patients to appropriate consulting physicians within Alaska when required.
  • Prescribes and dispenses appropriate pharmaceuticals including controlled substances as approved by the supervising physician, within the scope of the collaborative agreement and in accordance with DEA regulations.
  • Leads weekly training sessions of the Medical Emergency Response Team.
  • Maintains medical records according to company policies and expected standards of medical practice. This includes but is not limited to injury reporting, completion/review of medical forms, and maintenance of statistical logs.

Job Requirements – Education and Training:

  • Current State License / Certification
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification
  • 5 years remote experience or 3 years emergency medicine experience
  • Professional certification with NCCPA or AANP
  • Graduate of an American Medical Association accredited PA training program
  • Working history in the arctic a plus
  • Must possess a valid State of Alaska Driver’s License

Schedule: This position will work a rotational shift of two weeks on / two weeks off.

Summary:PA-C performs a broad scope of patient evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment in remote settings under the supervision of collaborative the physician by remote communications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs a history and physical examination pertaining to the patients presenting complaint
  • Reviews patient records to determine health status
  • Makes assessments based on record and examination
  • Records and presents information to supervising physician for final diagnosis and treatment as needed
  • Orders appropriate laboratory and x-ray studies
  • Communicate with receiving facility, Alaska MEDEVAC systems, and Medical Control
  • Monitor and maintain the general condition of the unit/clinic; keep it clean and re-supply any deficiencies
  • Prepares accurate, thorough documentation of every patient contact and patient care report
  • Refers patients to appropriate specialists for consultation, as needed
  • Prescribes medication, as indicated
  • Instructs and counsels patient or legal guardian regarding matters pertaining to the patient’s physical or mental health and the nature and treatment of her injury or illness and required follow up, in a courteous and cooperative manner
  • Performs routine diagnostic, therapeutic, and invasive procedures, as needed
  • Performs other duties as required to support the project

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Possesses expert knowledge of defibrillators and IV pumps
  • Works well in teams, alone, and in diverse groups of people

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, carry, and balance an adult patient with the assistance of others
  • Ability to run, walk, bend, and crawl on uneven terrain
  • Ability to withstand varied environmental conditions such as extreme heat, cold, and moisture
  • Ability to work in low light and confined spaces
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle (including ATVs)

Working Conditions:

  • Two week rotations, 12 hours/day for 7 days/ week shifts, and on-call after hours
  • Works in remote locations as an independent provider
  • Must be willing to work overtime and be on-call while at the site as needed
  • Must be willing to work weekends and holidays as needed
  • May be required to fly in small aircrafts
