Membership Details

Our goal is to use this website to keep our members up to date on all that is happening in the Academy and to provide members access to board members, create forums for the improvement of our profession, and to make available as many membership benefits as possible.

As a member of the Academy, you will have access to current information, have voting privileges, entitled to run for offices, and help direct the future of the Academy. You will be entitled to reduced costs on CME and have access to the "Members Area" of our website. You will also receive the quarterly newsletter "The Mediphone" as part of your membership. We will provide as many links as possible to other important areas related to the physician assistant field.

The Members Area of the site will include access to the Mediphone, the Job Board, and the Membership Directory; see below for further descriptions. Once we receive your payment and have entered your name into our database, you will be able to access that area. You will be sent a membership card with a user name and password when you register.

The Academy has grown thanks to dedicated members. We encourage you to join us today so that you can start taking advantage of all the Academy has to offer. We need your commitment if we are going to continue to grow.

There are three membership categories.

Fellow: Fellow Members are defined as Physician Assistants who are licensed in and residents of Alaska, and who are members of the AKAPA, and are Fellow members of the AAPA. Fellow members may hold any elected office within the Academy and shall have full voting privileges.

Fellow membership costs $100 per year, or $270.00 for a three year membership.

Associate: Members are defined as Physician Assistants or health care professionals who do not meet the criteria for AKAPA Fellow membership. Associate members shall have privileges of the floor but may not vote or hold office.

Associate membership costs $100 per year, or $270.00 for a three year membership.

Student: Members are defined as persons currently enrolled in an accredited PA training program, and who are from, reside or intend to reside in the State of Alaska following graduation. They shall be entitled to the privilege of the floor, but not hold office, nor have voting privileges.

Student membership is free of cost, however students must submit proof of enrollment in an accredited PA training program.

The Mediphone is published bimonthly and contains committee reports, announcements of upcoming conferences, current national and statewide healthcare issues, regulatory alerts and more.

The Job Board contains current information on open positions within the state of Alaska as well as members' requests for work. A moderator is assigned to keep all submissions current and to remove closed positions.

Physician Assistants (PAs) are highly skilled members of the health care team, licensed to practice medicine with the supervision of a licensed D.O. or M.D. A unique feature of the profession is that PAs are dependent practitioners who require the sponsorship of a physician or group of physicians to practice medicine. PAs can prescribe Schedule III through V drugs and provide a broad range of medical services delegated to them by their sponsoring physicians. PAs are trained and skilled in all areas of medical practice, such as Family Practice, Pediatrics, OB/GYN, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Rural Medicine and more.

There are approximately 340 PAs licensed to practice medicine in Alaska. PAs are licensed by the State Medical Board.
